About the Author

Charles Perrault was born in Paris on January 12, 1628. He was the son of an upper-class burgeois family and attended the best schools, becoming a lawyer in 1651. After being a lawyer for some time, he was appointed chief clerk in the king's building, superintendent's office in 1664. While there, show more he induced Colbert to establish a fund called Liste des Bienfaits du Roi, to give pensions to writers and savants not only in France but in Europe. He took part in the creation of the Academy of Sciences as well as the restoration of the Academy of Painting. When the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres was founded by Colbert in 1663, Perrault was made secretary for life. Having written but a few popular poems, he was elected to the French Academy in 1671, and on the day of his inauguration he invited the public to be admitted to the meeting, a privilege that has ever since been continued. Perrault laid the foundations for a new literary genre, the fairy tale, with his works derived from pre-existing folk tales. The best known of his tales include Le Petit Chaperon rouge (Little Red Riding Hood), Cendrillon (Cinderella), Le Chat Botté (Puss in Boots), La Belle au bois dormant (The Sleeping Beauty) and La Barbe bleue (Bluebeard). His stories continue to be printed and have been adapted to opera, ballet (for example, Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty), theatre, and film. He also wrote Parallèles des Anciens et des Modernes (the Parallels between the Ancients and the Moderns), from 1688 to 1697, which compared the authors of antiquity unfavorably to more modern writers, and caused a debate that lasted for years. Charles Perrault died on May 16, 1703. (Bowker Author Biography) show less

Short biography
Charles Perrault was born to a wealthy bourgeois family in Paris. He attended the best schools and was always top of his class. He chose the law as a career, and also worked with his older brother Jean collecting taxes for the city of Paris. His brother Claude Perrault became a prominent architect of the Louvre. King Louis XIV liked Charles Perrault and gave him several appointments and positions, including looking after royal buildings, designing tapestries, and writing poems. Perrault was elected to the Académie Française in 1671, and opened up the induction ceremony to the public for the first time. In 1672, he married Marie Guichon and the couple had several children. After she died in 1678, he gave up his public life to educate their children. He was nearly 70 years old when he published the book for which he's best remembered today, Contes de ma mère l’oye (Tales of Mother Goose, 1697). It contained eight classic fairy tales that continue to be beloved by adults and children and have inspired many other works, including Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Bluebeard, Puss in Boots, Cinderella, and Tom Thumb. Many of the stories were well-known oral tales in Perrault’s time, but had never been written down before.

The classic French fairytale, Puss in Boots, is translated into English and illustrated by the marvelous Marcia Brown in this lovely picture book. Coming to the youngest of three sons as an inheritance, the eponymous feline hero manages to transform his human's fortunes through his clever schemes. Reinventing his human as the Marquis de Carabas, Puss manages to convince the king of France that his master is a great and wealthy nobleman, eventually winning the estate and castle of an ogre for him, as well as the hand of the king's daughter...

Published in 1952, Puss in Boots is a translation of the original tale, Le Maître chat ou le Chat botté, as written by seventeenth-century French author Charles Perrault, whose work has also given us popular versions of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty. Brown's telling here is engaging, and her accompanying artwork delightful. It's easy to see why this was a Caldecott Honor book in 1953! As with Brown's Cinderella, which won the Caldecott Medal in 1955, I found the artist's use of color here appealing, and appreciated her elegantly stylized figures. Recommended to young fairy and folktale lovers, and to any picture book readers looking for retellings of the traditional story of Puss in Boots.
