Evelyn Waugh dips his toes into the world of science fiction.   In a future, dystopian Britain, Miles Plastic is in prison for arson. Which isn't so bad, really - the prisons are actually quite nice. When he is released, he finds himself a nice, wholesome job at a state-run euthanasia clinic trying to control the crushing volume of voluntary applicants. At the clinic he meets Clara, a beautiful, bearded woman, and falls in love. But, as it turns out, love formed at a euthanasia clinic is fraught with its own unique challenges.   Penguin Random House Canada is proud to bring you classic works of literature in e-book form, with the highest quality production values. Delightful, dystopian satire by a master. ( )

A short and strange read, the writing style is clearly Waugh, but this dystopian fiction is more in the line of Orwell's 1984 than Brideshead Revisited. The humor and the glamour are here, but this is a tale that focuses on what Could be in a future that seems rather too possible to easily brush off. If you can get your hands on the book, as it is difficult to find, it's a fascinating quick read that holds up to time and to Waugh's reputation. ( )

Book description
A brief fable of a dystopian future. Shows Waugh's savage satire, contempt for the modern world, and a unique comic flair. Clara undergoes an operation to be sterilized so that she may become a dancer. The result, she grows a beard. Miles, the reformed arsonist meets her at his place of employment, a state-sponsored euthanasia centre. They fall in love and madness continues. Anticipates "political correctness" with phrases such as "Santa Claus Holiday". A brutally comic, vicious attack on the way the world was heading, illustrated with sketches done by Waugh himself. Pompous, shows off his classical learning.
