About the Author

Robert Musil (November 6, 1880 - April 15, 1942) was an Austrian writer. Musil's Young Torless is a novel of troubled adolescence set in a military school, modeled on the one attended by both Musil and Rainer Maria Rilke. It was his first book and was immediately successful. He then abandoned his show more studies in engineering, logic, and experimental psychology and turned to writing. He was an officer in the Austrian army in World War I, lived in Berlin until the Nazis came to power, and finally settled in Geneva. He also wrote plays, essays, and short stories. The Man without Qualities, Musil's magnum opus, is a novel about the life and history of prewar Austria. It was unfinished when Musil died, though he had labored over the three-volume work for ten years. Encyclopedic in the manner of Proust and Dostoevsky, "it is a wonderful and prolonged fireworks display, a well-peopled comedy of ideas" (V. S. Pritchett)---and a critique of contemporary life. It made Musil's largely posthumous reputation. "Musil's whole scheme prophetically describes the bureaucratic condition of our world, and what can only be called the awful, deadly serious, and self-deceptive love affair of one committee for another" (Pritchett). Every page is full of ideas on many philosophical subjects and levels of abstraction. The core theme is the exploration of the conflict between thinking and feeling, between rational and irrational, between letting emotions guide us and having strict rational control over our lives. Also this book is very sexy, funny, heartwarming, exciting and relatable. I wish it didn't end so soon.

On second read, this volume is much less interesting and enjoyable than the first. Musil's wonderful sarcasm and almost bitter humor are nearly absent and he grapples with "big questions" with much less grace.

This is an incredible series, one worth reading more than once. The characters are so unique and beautifully drawn. The language is lovely and the perspective on this time in history is very interesting.

(book #64 from 2022):
The Man Without Qualities, Part III: Into the Millennium by Robert Musil
translation: from German by Sophie Wilkins, with assistance from Burton Pike (1995)
published: 1933
format: 402-page Vintage paperback
acquired: June 2022 read: Dec 20-31, 2022 time reading: 19:05, 2.8 mpp
rating: 3
genre/style: kind of a novel theme: Robert Musil
locations: Austria
about the author: 1880-1942, Austrian, but grew up mainly in Bohemia (then within the Austro-Hungarian empire, now within the Czech Republic). “In 1938, when Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany, Musil and his Jewish wife, Martha, left for exile in Switzerland” (Wikipedia)

Musil looks at thoughts and feelings and the dissolution of Austrian culture. What makes book 2 better than book 1 is Agathe, Ulrich‘s sister and coconspirator, in a way. She tones down the sexual tension, and enlivens the book because she‘s much more dynamic and alive than Ulrich.
