Gr. 4 to 7. Does intelligent life exist beyond our planet? This visually exciting examination looks at both the myth and the science related to the question. The authors, both British science writers, describe what alien life-forms might look like, how we might communicate with them, and the impact the discovery of extra solar planets has had on the development of scientific equipment. The book is organized into 17 appealing photo-spreads, comprising color photographs, detailed captions, and boxed insets that contain information about a scientist or about a historic scientific event, or suggested activities for would-be scientists. Although serious researchers will need to look elsewhere for more complete information, this will attract young astronomers and mathematicians as well as browsers older that the target audience.… (more)

The Space Atlas: A Pictorial Atlas Of Our Universe is a very large information book that I checked out for my science content/genre study project. There are subheadings and captions to help distinguish which text goes with each of the pictures. All of the content in the atlas is accurate and complex because the text goes into great detail. This is a wonderful book for upper elementary school children who want to learn anything and everything about about outer space.… (more)

To this day quantum mechanics is a second language. The only way I can even come close to understanding it is through a children's book. Great illustrations ; however, it is still out of my idea of what could or could not occur though.

Quite thin but largish-format with elaborate color drawings and nonlinear swatches of text. Does surprisingly well as a quick introductory survey of cosmology.
