Adam Lord Gifford established the Gifford Lectures in his will in order to "promote and diffuse the study of Natural Theology in the widest sense of the term — in other words, the knowledge of God." Each year, Scottish academicians are appointed to give a year-long series of lectures which will then be collected in book form.
